Park Slope, a Brooklyn, NY neighborhood, is nothing if not open-minded. This openness is being pushed to a new level with next Sunday’s opening of the popular sex shop, Babeland.
Owner Claire Cavanah hopes to create a comfortable, family-friendly place for people to explore sexuality as something that is normal and healthy. It’s about empowering women with things for everyday people, such as the “Sexy Mom” kit and slightly more intimidating products like bondage gear. Babeland is not your father’s back alley porn store. The new location is next to a maternity clothes shop and even goes so far as to have a baby changing station for all the new mothers who live in the area.
As of now, a lot of Park Slope residents haven’t noticed the little bit of scandal in their midst, but it can’t be promised that there might not be an uproar once the store officially opens this weekend. Let’s hope the moaning in response to Babeland is only the good kind.
